OIE: AMU for animals surveillance program page
The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has worked actively for more than two decades on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and developed a coherent strategy for its activities in this area. In the framework of the Global Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), WOAH has taken the lead to build a global database on antimicrobial agents intended for use in animals. The WOAH’s partners acknowledge this accomplishment as a major milestone in the global effort to contain antimicrobial resistance. The database is designed to:
- Monitor the type and use of antimicrobial products
- Support Member Countries in implementing Chapter 9. of the Terrestrial Code and Chapter 6.3. of the Aquatic Code
- Measure trends over time
- Trace circulation and use patterns globally
- Evaluate the quality and authenticity of antimicrobial products in use
The responsibility of WOAH to collect data on the use of antimicrobials in animals is reiterated in the GAP on AMR where WOAH is requested to ‘build and maintain a global database on the use of antimicrobial medicines in animals. As a result of the tremendous efforts of its Members, the WOAH Annual Report on Antimicrobial Agents Intended for Use in Animals has been published every year since December 2016 and has highlighted steady progress.
